Subject: [RBS] This list will soon be USELESS! Date: Tue, 19 Oct 1999 18:04:42 +0200 (IST) From: Jeremy Hoyland Reply-To: jeremy.hoyland@bigfoot.com To: Ramat Bet Shemesh list Hi, all! I'm not the list administrator or anything, but I have been using mailing lists for many years. My experience tells me that this list will soon become USELESS unless we ALL start using basic netiquette! What do I mean? Read on. The traffic on this list is TOO HIGH. This was the gist of Ronnie Parshan's (too long) joke earlier today. When list traffic is too high people either unsubscribe or set to digest mode (equivalent to "reluctantly unsubscribing" - you never get round to reading the digests, and you're always at least 24 hours out of date). How can we keep the list useful? Everyone should abide by a few simple rules: 1. Before you post - think twice. Usually, I postpone my posting and re-read it before pressing "send". 2. If you are replying to a post - reply to the SENDER and not to the LIST. 3. Keep it SHORT and TEXT - no HTML or attachments - at most, post a URL. 4. Send only things that are RELEVANT TO YOUR AUDIENCE. Posts about upcoming events in RBS - fine. Snow in Guatamala - send to alt.guatamala.snow. Don't send more than one reminder post (Malcolm - the next time I want to hear about the b... elections is THURSDAY WEEK - got it?). Commercial stuff or regular events (e.g. paper goods, mishpachtonim, regular shiurim etc.) no more than once a month, unless the info changes each week. 5. If you got lots of useful answers to a general-interest question it is polite to collate the answers and post to the list - unless everyone copied to the list as well! Let's make this list THE community resource for local issues! Reply to ME, not to the list - of course. -- Jeremy Hoyland hoyland@is.elta.co.il ============================================================ RBS mailing list rbs@cs.huji.ac.il RBS home page http://www.cs.huji.ac.il/~momo/rbs/ For subscribe / unsubscribe / digest/ vacation requests send to: rbs-request@cs.huji.ac.il: in the body of the message write: subscribe / unsubscribe / set digest /set vacation / unset digest / unset vacation
