Automatic vs. Interactive Tone Mapping

Automatic vs. Interactive Tone Mapping

In the examples below we compare results produced by three automatic tone mapping operators with the result we obtained with our interactive tool. The results marked Reinhard were produced using Reinhard's photographic tone mapper (with the parameters determined automatically as described in Reinhard's 2002 article in the Journal of Graphics Tools). Results marked Durand were generated using the Durand and Dorsey 2002 technique. Results marked Fattal were generated using the gradient domain HDR compression technique, described in Fattal et al. 2002.

Instructions: Roll your mouse over each thumbnail to see a larger version of the image appear below. As the mouse exits the thumbnail, the displayed version shows our result. This makes it possible to easily flip back and forth between our results and the alternative ones. Clicking on a thumbnail shows the full resolution result.
