Abstract:

Group communication systems (GCSs) are now widely recognized as powerful building blocks for supporting consistency and fault-tolerance in distributed applications. In this paper we present a novel GCS called Xpand. The main objective of the Xpand design is to address the needs of a wide spectrum of collaborative wide area network applications without compromising the semantics of traditional GCSs to the extent possible. In order to achieve this goal Xpand introduces a separation between strong and weak service levels, a scalable failure detection, an external infrastructure for membership maintenance and hierarchical engine for message reliability.
